Week 6
Moi from Finland!
Week 6 is in the books! This week consisted of receiving fresh mushrooms and eating freshly made Finnish pancakes/waffles. We received mushrooms at practice and split them up among the team. Alexis and Pilvi cleaned and dried them in the oven. It takes about 6 hours at a very low heat to dry them effectively! I am not a big mushroom eater, but Alexis said they were good. The pancakes were baked in the oven and are not as fluffy as the ones back home. The waffles are softer and more thin than the ones back home as well. We ate these with Nutella, home-made whipped cream, and jam!
The tournament we had was located in Kuusamo. We got on the bus around 1:30pm on Friday for departure. I was a little surprised at the bus, being that it was nicer than the ones we would take for my college volleyball travel trips. It was a bigger bus with leather seats and many rows.
The drive was about 5 hours northeast of Pihtipudas....and I saw my first reindeer! They tend to hang out on the side of the road so our bus would have to slow down a few times. Once we arrived to Kuusamo, we stopped to get dinner and head to the cabin. The drive was super pretty with LOTS of trees, lakes, and more trees. On the way back I even saw my first overseas rainbow.

The cabin was BEAUTIFUL. It had 16 beds (it could still fit more), was completely made out of wood, and overlooked a small lake/pond. Each room had its own bathroom so that was super convenient. The mornings before the games consisted of half the team waking up and making breakfast for the team. Then we would head out to the gym for our games at 12pm and 3pm versus Kuusamo and WoVo. The games went a little rough Saturday night, we had a team sauna and that was really the first time I have sat in one for more than 10 minutes. I stayed in the sauna for about 45 minutes. I had a good laugh when the girls would cook sausages over the hot sauna rocks haha! They were pretty good, surprisingly. The sauna here is a big deal and regular routine for the Finns.
The following link is a small video that I put together of the trip we just had:

We played again at 12pm and 3pm on Sunday against the same teams; then finished with a 3-0 win to head home. The games now really don't mean anything except for giving us a better feel for each other. I am glad we have had these games to better understand what is going on. We arrived back about 11pm last night and had the day off today. So a little bit of R&R while doing some video review. We have another friendly-game this upcoming Saturday against Puijo-WoVo. Also the roster finally got updated with the new headshots: https://liigaploki.fi/joukkue
